What's in a name?

Do you remember name cards? They were small paper cards you could find at a Bible Book Store or a Card Store. On them was a person’s name with its meaning and an accompanying scripture. I used to love looking at them, seeing how many people’s names I knew I could find. Mine usually said: Danielle God is my judge. Proverbs 3:5-6.

A few weeks ago I finally finished reading “One Thousand Gifts” by Anne Voscamp. Although it took me about 10 months to finish; it was such a fabulous book that made a huge impact on me. Throughout the book she is trying to find who God has created her to be and in the process find the definition of her name in her life; Anne means full of grace.

This got me thinking about my name, Danielle, and reminded me of the little scripture cards I mentioned before. All of a sudden it hit me; my name means God is my judge! For some this may be a harsh reality to face, for a people pleaser however, it was quite a freeing concept. We do not need to be bound by what other people think of us. God is our judge.

Proverbs 3:5-6 in NIV says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

What if God was challenging me to live more up to my name? For me that would mean to be less of a people pleaser; to remember that what other people think of me isn’t as important as what God thinks of me.  It would also mean to trust God with all of my heart, not just part of it, but with my whole heart. He also wants me to lean on His understanding, not pretend like I have everything figured out when I don’t have a clue. And lastly to submit to Him in everything and He’ll make my pathway straight.

What does your name mean? And who is God calling you to be? Is He calling you to live up to your name’s meaning?
