Rest for the Weary

I'm joining a link up today, Five Minute Fridays, over with Lisa-Jo Baker
Rules: Write for 5 minutes flat with no critiquing or self editing about the topic.
Today's topic: Rest

Ready, set, go:
God rested. God, the creator of all things, rested. He created and worked and made and enjoyed for 6 days and then rested. If God, who is so much bigger than me rested, why is it so hard for me to rest. Why does our world look at rest as a weakness when God, the creator of both the world and rest created it as a blessing?

"Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."Matthew 11:28. Jesus even tells us to rest, it's not just a thing for the Old Testament. Jesus knew the importance of rest; rest in nature, rest with friends, and rest with God and He encourages us to take advantage of those too.

So why do I find it so hard to rest? I think partially it's because our world is too busy, cluttered, and filled to find time to do that. And partially because we need to retrain ourselves to enjoy rest again.

Rest doesn't always mean a nap, although some days that's an enjoyable way to rest. Rest can mean reading your Bible and praying. Rest can mean taking a walk through the woods. Rest can mean taking your family to do something you all enjoy. Rest will look different for everyone but it's needed for everyone.

This is something I need to listen to God more about and force myself to do more often. Maybe you do too. When you're life is at it's busiest, take a moment to breathe and find that space of rest, whatever it looks like.

What do you do to rest?

  1. I love to remember that even Jesus had to take off and rest now and then...

  2. Thanks. I remember to sleep but seldom think about pausing to rest.

  3. Wow, powerful entry about REST. I never thought about it that way, but if our Lord God could rest, why can't I? Thank you for your great perspective.

  4. These are great truths for me to remember. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and thoughts with us!
